EYES TO SEE, EARS TO HEAR – Part 8: What are You Building Your Life on?
BIBLE PASSAGE: Matthew 7:24-27
- Obedience Is the Foundation
Jesus makes it clear in this parable that both the wise and foolish builders heard His words. They both listened. They both had access to the truth. But the difference between the two wasn’t in what they heard. It was in what they did with what they heard. The wise man acted. The foolish man didn’t. One applied the truth; the other let it pass through without change. And that one choice made all the difference when the storm came.
That’s a hard reality for us today, because we live in a time where hearing God’s Word is easier than ever. We have endless access to podcasts, YouTube sermons, worship playlists, Christian books, social media devotionals, you name it. We can quote verses, sing songs with conviction, and even say “amen” to good preaching. But Jesus isn’t impressed by how much we hear; He’s looking for how much we live.
James 1:22 puts it plainly: “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” That phrase “deceive yourselves” should grab our attention.
It means you can sit under the Word, enjoy the Word, even agree with the Word, and still live in a dangerous illusion if you’re not doing what it says. Obedience is what turns spiritual knowledge into spiritual maturity. It’s the difference between building on solid rock or shifting sand.
Sometimes, we treat sermons and Bible studies like spiritual entertainment. We take notes, we say “wow, that was good,” but we leave unchanged. But the wise builder, like the wise virgins in the Parable of the Ten Virgins, prepared ahead of time. He didn’t just listen to Jesus’ words and admire them. He made decisions based on them. He adjusted his life. He dug deep. He did the hidden work. Just like the wise virgins brought oil in advance, the wise builder obeyed in advance. No shortcuts. No last-minute scrambling.
So let’s ask ourselves: Am I obeying what I already know? Am I building my life on God’s Word in my everyday choices, how I treat people, how I handle money, how I respond in conflict, how I manage temptation? Because the difference between the wise and the foolish is not about how much they heard, it’s about how much they lived. And obedience, not emotion or information, is the true foundation that will hold when life shakes.
- What You Build On Will Be Tested
Jesus didn’t say if the storm would come; He said when. Matthew 7:25 – “And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house.” That’s not hypothetical. That’s real life. Storms are not a matter of if, but when. Every single one of us, no matter how strong, spiritual, or successful we may seem, will face moments that test us. No one is exempt.
And maybe for you, the storm has already started. Maybe you’re sitting here today trying to hold it together while facing a crisis at home, a health scare, financial strain, a broken relationship, or a silent struggle with anxiety or depression. You might be doing everything you can to keep your “house” from falling apart, but you feel the rain pounding, the water rising, the winds howling. And it’s really hard.
But here’s what we need to remember: Storms don’t destroy us because they’re storms, but they reveal what’s been holding us up all along. They expose the foundation. When life is going well, it’s easy to think everything is fine. But when the things we depended on start to shake, the truth comes out: What have I really been standing on?
The wise builder’s house didn’t stand because of how it looked; it stood because of what was beneath it. The unseen part. The solid ground of God’s Word, faithfully lived out day by day, was what gave him strength when the storm came. And Jesus says the same is true for us.
That’s why obedience matters. That’s why applying God’s Word in the quiet, ordinary seasons of life is so critical because those are the moments we’re digging our foundation. The wise builder didn’t wait for the storm to start building. He prepared before it came. That’s what made all the difference.
So the question is: Are you preparing before the pressure hits? Are you grounding your life in the truth of God’s Word now, not just when things go wrong, but in the day-to-day? Because storms will come. And when they do, it won’t be the size of your house or the applause of the crowd that will keep you standing. It will be the strength of your foundation.
What we build on matters. It’s not enough to avoid collapse. We need a foundation that actually holds. One that doesn’t shift with emotions, circumstances, or trends. One that stays firm when everything else around us shakes. And there’s only one thing in this world that offers that kind of strength: the unchanging, unfailing Word of God. Let’s talk about why…
III. Only the Word of God Can Hold You Together
Sand moves. It never stays still. It looks solid for a while, but under pressure, it crumbles, it gives way. In many ways, that’s exactly what life can feel like. Feelings shift. People change. Expectations rise and fall. One moment you feel secure, and the next, everything’s up in the air. What felt steady yesterday suddenly feels fragile today. And if your life is built on things that constantly move, then your peace, your joy, your identity will move with them.
But God’s Word doesn’t shift. It doesn’t change with trends, emotions, or opinions. Isaiah 40:8 says, “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.” God’s Word has outlasted kingdoms, wars, movements, and generations. It was true before you were born, and it will still be true long after your current situation has passed.
We’re not just called to build lives that look good, we’re called to build lives that last. There’s a big difference. It’s easy to build for appearance: post the right photos, say the right words, show up in church, and appear strong. But that won’t hold you together in the dark. What you’ve built your life on will show up when the pressure is on. And when your life is built on God’s Word, something powerful happens:
You’ll have peace when others panic because you’re anchored in truth, not circumstances. You’ll stand strong when others fall because your faith isn’t in people or emotions, but in God’s promises. You’ll still be faithful when the waiting gets long because you know God is always working, even in the silence.
The foolish builder realized too late that his house had no anchor. By the time the storm hit, it was already built on something that couldn’t hold. Maybe that’s the real wake-up call for us today: It’s not about what we SAY on Sunday; it’s about what we LIVE on Monday, and every day after that. It’s not about how spiritual we appear; it’s about how grounded we really are. And when the storms come, and for sure they will, the only thing that will keep you standing is the Word of God planted deep in your heart and lived out with faith.
So don’t settle for a surface life. Dig deep. Build on the rock. Because only one foundation holds. It’s the unshakable, unchanging, eternal Word of God.
LIFE GROUP DISCUSSION:
1) What storms are you currently facing, or have faced recently? How did your foundation hold up during that time? What did it reveal about what you’re standing on?
2) What part of the sermon convicted or challenged you the most? Why do you think that part stood out to you?
3) If someone looked at the way you handle pressure, conflict, or pain, what would they say your life is built on? Would it point them to Jesus?
